Here's the problem. I have a printer(HP LaserJet 4 plus) at a remote location which has a problem with it. We replaced this printer with a (HP 4MP) which we had sitting around and connecting through the serial port. I have looked at the config on the HP LJ4 and set the HP 4MP to the same settings. We can not get the 4MP to print. We are not sure if something needs to be changed in the AIX 4 system to recognize this new printer or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My first thought is to make sure you can connect, try ping and verify name resolution is working. Worst case you might have to make a new queue. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation

I am AIX illiterate, could you help me on how to ping the printer? what command do I use? Thanks

ping printername

To see if DNS lookup is working properly:
nslookup printername

To see if reverse-lookup is working:
nslookup printerIP

Hi
If you are using the serial port of your AIX Server to connect to the printer then check whether the printer is online (hope that your configuration is correct and you have selected the correct serial port)
issue the following to check whether the printer is in ready state

# lpstat
then u should get "your_q_name" READY
if not, try
# enable "your_q_name"

even then it is not coming up means, try re-installing the printer with general serial port printer option.
