Hi there people,

A friend of mine has recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv6815ed notebook, that came with Windows Vista Home edition. Not liking the OS, the tried downgrading to Windows XP Professional with a Retail CD. So, a few frustrating days later, I'm assigned installing the OS.

Finding XP drivers for this notebook is really tricky it seems, as HP itself only offers WLAN & Chipset drivers. However, I'm still stuck with a load of uninstalled devices I cannot identify the manufacturer of.

If only I knew what devices are in that notebook...

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Dennis

There is a list of some of the devices here, but not all.

One recommendation would be to restore the Vista Home, then audit the devices either in Device Manager or using Belarc Advisor.

Step One in De-Vistafying a PC is getting a list of the hardware first; you will undoubtedly be able to find the drivers somewhere. Also, many OEMs have XP "downgrade" kits available that will retain the warranty. Best of luck.

in the device manager, double click any uninstalled device, then go to the tab called "DETAILS", there you will see something along the line of:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_00F1&SUBSYS_81C61043&REV_A24&1B197270&0&00F0

you then take the VEN_10DE&DEV_00F1 (e.g.) and paste them into GOOGLE, this will identify what hardware it is and who manufactured it...

VEN_10DE = nVidia and DEV_00F1 = 6600GT
