I have been having a similar problem to designware's ps, however it is a bit different. My computer would just shut itself off from time to time, and I determined it was over heating, put it in a colder place, and left the case open..that worked for awhile, then the ps went dead, no light at all.I decided to replace the ps. When I disconnected it and took it out, I decided to test it one more time..The light came on, but the fan has yet to turn on. Does that mean the problem is elsewhere, or because the fan on the ps is not working, that is the problem, just replace the ps. I am confused.
Appreciate any suggestions.

replace the power supply, see if this solves your problem. Builders seem to cut expenses on power supplies, find a reliable brand with plenty of power & replace it.

I agree the the PSU is probably the problem... it starting with the overheating or probably bad capacitors that finally died...

make sure that the HP does not use a proprietary PSU, in that case you would mostlikely have to purchase a replacement from HP themselves (overpriced)...

so double check the connector (color coding of the wires) if they are the same as the new purchased one, before you insert it on the mobo...
