On my HP LJ 5N, I keep getting an error message stating "tray 3 empty", but in reality it is quite full! Does anyone have any tips for me on how to figure out what is causing it to give out the wrong message? I am sure it is a hardware issue...

check the flag take out the tray you should see a little plastic part hang down if you don't its broke and you need to get a new flag there like $20 bucks but can be hard to put in if you never done it. So long and thanks for all the fish.

thanks for that tip,but the hanging flag is there. How much tension is suppose to be on it? I tried to tape it up to see if that simulates paper in the tray but I still get a tray 3 empty message. Ihave unplugged the tray three unit and just plugged in the printer part but it gives me this clicking "cycling" sound when I do until I plug it back in again.

the flag need no tension it pass a light sensor on the top half.

does it try to pull papper then give the error: if it is then it a problem with the roller they are not turning or they need cleaning

if the error is there all the time then the sensor is bad you get a new sennor on hp site at So long and thanks for all the fish.

The message is constant so it is probably the sensor in the system.I need to figure out how to get to that sensor to order the correct part/price it etc

Thank you very much!
