HP Laserjet1200 won't install on windows xp

I have a HP Laserjet1200 that i am trying to install on windows xp. The computer recognises the printer and tries to install it. However just before it finishes copying the files it fails. I've tried downloading software from the internet, i also tried to update the driver for the printer but the computer hangs if i try to do this. also in the device manager it shows there being 2 IEEE 1284.4 devices but no printers connected to the computer. I'm terribly confused so any help would be much appreciated

I just did a 1020 and had trouble until I updated all the USB drivers (for the motherboard) at the hardware level.

You could try connecting as usb instead of parallel.

You could also consider uninstalling all the devices, telling the computer not to automatically install what it detects on reboot, and then run the 1200 install cd, reboot when instructed, and see if that helps.
