HP LaserJet III won't play well with new Epson 3170 scanner

My old HP LaserJet III worked fine with my old scanner, but it doesn't play well with my new Epson Perfection Photo 3170 which is higher resolution and USB2.0 (I'm running Windows 98SE). If I try and scan a simple B&W text document to the printer, the printer will print about half of the document on one page and half on another--and both pages look terrible, like they were printed on a low-res dot-matrix printer. I've tried scanning to an application first, and then printing it to the scanner, but the results are the same. Sometimes the printer will print the whole page, but the characters are wavey and low-res. The Epson scanner seems to be fine when I scan to other applications, and it works well with an inkjet printer, but it will not play nice with my old HP LaserJet III. And the LaserJet III works fine when I print a MS Word document, etc...or print a scanned image from my old (slower) scanner. But it won't do a good job printing something scanned from this new Epson 3170 scanner, either directly, or through an application. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
