I am trying to install a HP LaserJet 5L PCL in Windows 98. The original drivers are Windows 95. The software will install, but when W98 tries to install the usb device it will not work (can not find drivers). I have been to HP website and downloaded the W98 updated drivers (lj622.exe) and tried all of the technical advice. I am able to update the printer drivers to W98, but still can not install the usb printer. I changed the bios to ECP instead of bidirectional and LPT1 to auto IRQ. When I browse to the updated drivers the usb will begin to install and then can not find the file hplj5l.cat. I am really at my wits end and could desperately use some help, please.

okay, here's a question for you. Are you able to use other USB devices on your Win98 machine? And have you tried printing through the parallel cable/port? Just curious.

By the way, if your computer can handle it, I'd make the upgrade to Win XP. The machine would have to be fairly new (less than 2 yrs old), but I've found the upgrade to be well worth the expense. Had a Compaq Presario laptop running Win ME and it was weak. Installed XP upgrade, major changes. Best thing I could do to the machine.
