Hi all

A few months ago, our network was netbeui and ipx/spx and each computer printed directly to the printer via jetdirect. Since we moved to tcp/ip and have the NT 4 server as the print server, jobs have slowed considerably. Are there any settings I need to change or look into ?

Thanks Missy Ed

check the driver make sure they have the memory set right and if the are post script check the cable and if epp/ecc are on the sever that a good starting point.

Check that the JetDirect box attached to the printer has the correct IP settings - and that network speed is set to 100Mb/sec.

Is the printer on the same subnet as the printer server? If the print job has to negotiate routers and so forth, this will slow the job down.

Check spooler settings on the printer server.

Try setting up an LPR printer port on the printer server, using the IP address of the printer, and remove the Jet Direct software.

When your users connect to the printer, use the Add Printer wizard to connect to a network printer, and browse for it.
I have seen some installations that set up the printers as shares from the printer server. In my opinion, this is not good - too many users connecting to a single share will slow the server down.

This is not an exhaustive list - and I appreciate you've probably tried much of this.

I'd definitely double-check network settings, though.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for all your help. I've double-checked everything and found some settings were incorrect, changed the spooler settings to print when 1st page is spooled, sorted out the connection from 10 to 100 and double-checked the drivers. Its much faster now !
