We purchased a LaserJet 4200 in April of 2003. It is not under warrenty. It is used daily but not a high volume. From talking to HP we have determined that it is the fuser. The fuser is only at 71% so I feel it should be replaced by HP since it must be defective. Does any one have any tips on getting a person on the phone that could make a decision? Or does anyone know a website that I could post my complaint?

Thanks.

I dont think it would be worth the effort since replacement is so easy. I suppose you could fight hard to replace an ink cartridge in a deskjet.. but it wouldnt be worth it.

A fusor is a consumable not a piece of hardware like a workstation or laptop.

more power to ya...

btw what happened to it?

I have a 4200 at about 175,000 copies (of an expected lifetime of 200,000 I think) also well out of warranty. It kept jamming paper and I discovered that one of the 2 blue fastener clips that snap and hold the fuser in place had cracked apart. Since it had never been taken apart before, who know when it really broke loose. Believe it or not, you cannot buy that silly little clip since it is not available as a separate part. I gave up and bought a fuser. But I'm holding on to the old furse because it was fine except for the clamp. When this one goes, I'll swap clips and put it back in again!

I do have a toll free number I call when I have fuser problems with my 9000 printers - that's their weak lnk in that model. I'll look for it on Monday...

Good luck getting anything from HP.

If you do want to just replace the fuser, I have been buying HP parts from
You can probablly get just a fuser or you may want to get the "mainentance kit". It includes the fuser and serveral other parts that require periodic replacement.

This is the number I use for our HP 9000 printers. Try it, the worst they can say is No, which is likely as I'm not aware of significant problems with 4200 fusers and you don't have an extended maintenance contract. You have to work yuor way through the automated menus before you get to a human.

I deal with HP all the time regarding warranty issues. If the printer is out of warranty, they will not do anything for you, unless you want to pay them for service. I would take the advice of the others above and buy a new fuser, unless you have a service manual and want to repair it yourself.

Good luck,
Mike

This message is for dbMark and anyone else that thinks you cannot buy the little blue locking clips for fusers including the 4200. Instead of buying a whole new fuser, you can save money and buy just the blue locking clips at Partsmart, Corp in Atlanta, Georgia. There website is and sell for $1.80 apiece.
