Hi there. I have this huge problem with a 2840 printer that is unable to print colours from a DOS program, is there any way to send a command to make it do colours? It is located on a Windows XP enviroment, and works like a charm both on network and local. But no colours from DOS.

From DOS? From a program in DOS?

If you're running a DOS program, then you would need to check the printer driver for that DOS program. Unless the DOS program is specifically using the windows print engine, *and* passing color information, it's not going to print color.

Remember, your DOS program was probably written before color laser printers were affordable, and therefore doesn't have drivers to print in color.

Do you have the software reference manual available? That would be the first step, finding the commands to change color.

On earlier printers, the printer controls usable under DOS or basic were listed along with examples of machine code. Don't know if it is still available in the later machines.

In the operating manual, is there any notation of emulation of other printers? If so, you may have some luck getting the control codes from another machine's manual.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

According to the HP specification for the Colour LaserJet 2840, it only supports PCL6 (a.k.a PCL XL) and PostScript, but not PCL5.

So the DOS program would presumably have to be generating either PCL XL or a PostScript print stream, both of which seem unlikely.

Note that the Tek-Tips 'PCL' forum includes (in the FAQs section) details of where to find PCL5 and PCL6 documentation.
