Hi there,

I've recently got a new laptop, with no parallel port and Vista Home premium.

I bought a USB to Parallel Cable - and have plugged this in.

I have added the printer driver, and have changed the port to USB001 - but, unfortunately it is not printing anything -with no specific error message.

Any idea's what i need to do?

kind regards,
Neil

Are you certain that is the correct port?

Try adding a new printer and letting Windows automatically detect it.

well ive tried both my usb ports - and still no joy :(

Windows doesnt aut detect - it recognises a USB device by making a sound, but thats it ???

The printer may not use USB 2.0, is the laptop using 2.0?
Try a standard USB port.

Hi,

thanks for the replies.

aha - Its a brand new laptop and an old old old printer (im using a parallel to USB cable). This may be the case.

however, im guessing all my usb (3 x) ports will be USB 2- is there a way of making it a USB 1?

thanks again,
Neil

Have you tried enabling/disabling two-way communication in the driver ? (Bi-directional mode) Your Parallel -> USB adapter must support this feature also. Since this printer does not sport a native USB port, there might be complications when translating the parallel data to USB.
In general HP does not support this solution with a Parallel -> USB adapter but they do sell a connectivity card with USB / parallel & serial ports so it is likely it might work with a USB solution.

If your ports are USB-2, they are backward-compatible with USB 1.1.

Meanwhile, most likely the driver for the USB parallel cable isn't installed correctly.

Go into your device manager, find the USB printer cable, right-click, and uninstall.

Next, unplug the USB cable, and install the drivers for it BEFORE plugging it back in.

Then plug in, you should get the "Found new hardware" balloon, and be in good shape. :)
