HP LaserJet 1200 Printer stops working no error message

I have a HP LaserJEt 1200 Series installed on a Dell OptiPlex, O/S WIN 98 SE.
The printer is working fine for a few days, then starts spooling and nothing happens, it will not print. I have to restart the PC.
I replaced the printer cord, uninstalled and re-installed the software a few times, no luck
I don't get any error messages, sometimes I can purge the documents, sometimes not.
Any idea, the user is getting very frustrated.
The printer was shared, but I took it off, and now it is just a local printer.

Can you do a testpage both from windows, and on the printer ? Is bi-directional mode (EPP/ECP) enabled on the parallel port in BIOS, or is it connected via USB ?
