I don't know the exact event that caused our old sturdy HP laserjet 4 to print a line of gibberish at the top of the page, but here's what's happened:
1. installed laser cartridge
2. print single page from MS Word (prints fine)
3. another computer lab user prints from the browser - the gibberish begins: single line at the top of each page, for multiple pages
This is what I've done thus far to troubleshoot:
- this print behavior happens from any desktop on this peer to peer network
- the printer/properties/fonts menu shows "no fonts installed". When I select "install fonts", windows goes to a:/, requesting a disk i don't have. I didn't see help on HP.com.
- Staples (where we bought the laser cartridge) suggested a Cold Reset of the printer. No change.
- Called HP: they no longer support the printer.
ANY THOUGHTS?
