HP laser jet 6L says "not connected"

Okay before you all ask it is plugged in. Now I've been getting this all weekend and rebooted and it still is doing this. The error message says this "Device is not connected" If you can help please help me.

i've got a 6L too but i can't seem to even print at all. i keep getting the error message 'Error Printing'

what's wrong?

i'm using XP Home.
the hardware is working fine although windows cannot automatically detect my printer.
