Here is something I found from fixyourownprinter.com:
Re: Hp laserjet 4 error W2 INVAILD PERS
I have a home network (peer-to-peer), 7 Workstations, running with different Windows versions (i.e. XP, 2000, Me and 98SE). We finally had our cable modem configured with a router and since then configuring our HP LaserJet 4 and 4Plus was a nightmare. I have used all the recommended Printer and JetDirect drivers from this site but would get errors such as "the system not finding the printer" and "W2 Invalid Pers". After further troubleshooting, I think, the issue here is the driver that is being used when launching the "HP Install Network Printer Wizard". There is a portion in this wizard that will ask the user which driver to use. The lj632en worked fine with XP. But the ones for Me and 98 would give me the "W2 Invalid Pers".
I uninstalled the drivers and did the following on all Windows versions and installation went fine:
1. Install HP LaserJet 4 using Add Printer from Control Panel
Start > Control Panel > Printers > Add Printer > Next > “Local Printer” > Next > Manufacturer = HP > Printer = HP LaserJet 4 > Next > Set as default? = No > Next > Share this printer? = No > Next > Print test page? = No > Next > Finish > REBOOT
2. Add IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol in Network Properties
Start > Control Panel > Network Connection > right-click Local Area Connection > Properties > Add/Install > Protocol > NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol > OK > Close all windows and go back to desktop > REBOOT
Start > Programs > HP Install Network Printer Wizard > HP Install Network Printer Wizard > Next > Specify a Printer by Address > Next > IPX Address > 000000 XXXXXXXXXXXX (JetDirect MAC Address) > Configure network settings for me > Next > Select a driver from a list this PC knows > Next > HP LaserJet 4 > Next > New Printer > Next > Not Shared > Next > Install > Finish > Print Test Page > Yes
5. Delete HP LaserJet 4 and rename New Printer to HP LaserJet 4
Start > Control Panel > Printer > right-click HP LaserJet 4 > Delete > Yes > OK > right-click New Printer > Rename to HP LaserJet 4 > Enter > right-click HP LaserJet 4 > Set as Default > Yes
