HP Laser Jet 1200 won't print copies of documents

Just added the first Windows 7 machine to our Domain.

This user has an HP Laser Jet 1200 sitting in their office that they use to print specific documents on, usually they require 3 copies of the documents.

However the printer will only print a single copy. I've set all settings to be able to print multiple copies, and it still will not do it.

I've found several threads on different forums with the same problem but it seems there is no solution to it.

Some say to un-check the collate option, done that, some say to update the Driver , done that too.

Others just have no answer.

Nothing I try seems to let the user print copies of documents.

Anybody know what could possibly be wrong?

I have an LJ1200 with 48Mb RAM and PS module. It's working fine with WinXP.

I've not hooked it up to a Win7 PC, but over the next few days, I could give it ago and see what happens.

Are you using the USB port? And which driver - the one Win7 decides?

Yeah in XP it worked fine. Its only now on & that it just won't print any copies.

The Driver is the one found at HP's site:
HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5

It seems to create 2 printers, one that has always a problem, no matter what you do you can't repair or delete, and another one that I had to manually point to the port of the first one so it would print, otherwise it would not print at all.

By the way its Windows 7 32 Bit. Its definitely a driver issue, but being no other drivers there I though maybe someone knew if there was some other driver perhaps for another printer that may work on this one.

The Win7 PC currently has HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v5.0) and HP Universal Printing PS (v5.0) active for a networked LJ2300DN, so it'll be interesting to see what happens when the LJ1200 is plugged in.

It'll be late tomorrow by the time I've done it.

Just out of interest, and something I am looking at with my machine, do you have the correct Printer listed in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers. Do you have a Device listed bearing your Computer Name which if you right-click on has several Printer Settings among many other hardware/software settings? If the latter applies can you use those Printer Settings to fix the problem?

Well, exactly the same happened to me!

It installed easily and correctly.

Before:

After:

and confirmed:

And then when entering "3" for three copies in Adobe Reader, and clicking "Print", I get this:

I'm amazed!

Yes, but nothing obvious about Printer settings. [sad]

Yup that's exactly what I get. Minus the error, seems adobe is a little more forthcoming with the errors. While Word and Excel just quietly ignore it and print only one copy.

So it would seem its a driver issue.

I've tried to alter the copy setting in the Printer Properties setting it up to 10, and still only one copy comes out.

Using your more verbose error from Adobe I did find this MS KB article:

It seems its a known problem for which MS offers several solutions some I've tried, others not yet, so I'll give them a shot tomorrow when I'm back at the clients office.

I think I figured it out. (images included, OS is in Spanish)
For some strange reason, the Printer is using the Copies value from the Advanced Options Tab in the Properties Page:

copias.png

you get when pressing the Properties button at the Print
dialog box

PRINT1.png

as a maximum number of copies it can produce. If you set it to one, it prints only one copy regardless of how many you set at the Print dialog.

If you set it higher it will print up to that many copies.

You can then set the value for the number of copies normally and it will respect it. If you set the number higher than the one in the Properties page it will only print up to that number of copies and no more.

Now here is the kicker, this setting only works if you access it from the Printer dialog box. If you try to get at it from the Printer Properties in Devices and Printers it just ignores the value completely and still only prints a single page.

Phil, that means once that "Number of Copies" is set, it remains as a maximum until changed?

And yes, Ben, I was using the same HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5, which windows search for and downlaoded automatically.

Phil, did not catch that at first, sorry...

I know that the PCL6 driver does not function with every piece of software out there, but it could be worth a look, one can always revert back to the PCL5 driver...

or even try the XP driver (not the universal one) on W7...

though I have never tried this, so am not sure if it works or not...

Yup, That would be correct.

I'm still fiddling with it as I get the chance, but for now they can print copies.

I forgot to mention, that the fix also changes the default value for the "Copies" text box in the Print Dialog window.

So one has to be careful when printing a single copy to set the value down 1, otherwise its left at the max value set and will spit out the specified number of copies.

I'll give it another go, with the XP and PCL6 drivers next week when the user will be out for a couple of days, that way I can have the machine all to myself for testing.
