Hello

I have just bought an HP nx7000 notebook. I seem to be having a problem with the keyboard. Neither of the shift keys or the function key seems to work.

I have Windows XP Professional OS.

I would be very grateful if someone could assist me with this.

Many Thanks

Melanie

By the sounds of things you may have a bit of dirt or bad connection for that one key
It's a pain to take apart but you could try cleaning the contact's for that key.
If you have never tried taking a laptop apart I suggest you take it to a shop as there are lots of parts to remove to gain access to it

Hello

Thankyou for your reply.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling it could be a configuration problem with the laptop. It seems a coinsidence that its both the shift keys that dont work. I've also discovered that the two ctrl keys also do not work along with the fn key. However all the other keys seem to work fine.

If anyone has any answers please could you let me know

Many thanks

Melanie

Hi,

Can't believe someone is having the same problem on the same day. I have a Sony VIOU lap-top and my shift keys don't work.
Hope someone can help.

This is not, not, not an OS issue.

It is a hardware issue. If the machine is under warranty, send it back. In most cases it is a keyboard-to-motherboard connector issue. But it could be very expensive things, such as a chip failing on the motherboard, or a faulty keyboard.

When in doubt for any notebook issue under Warranty, return it for service. They are just simply too difficult for even experienced computer gearheads to mess with unless forced.

For example, I purchased a relatively high-end notebook from xBM, paying a fairly premium price for it. Anything that has gone wrong with that thing, even as a temporary glitch, it goes back to the shop. Keys too stiff? Back to the shop. Drive is too noisy? Back to the shop. Display panel seems loose? Back to the shop. Display missing pixels? Back to the shop.

Do not mess around yourself with notebooks under Warranty. The notes above suggest the keyboard problems are OS or configuration related. They are not. They are hardware pure and simple.

Get it fixed now, as out-of-warranty it can make you cry how expensive a simple repair can be.
