That's brilliant.

What I want to do is to use the beast to do personalised direct mail letters. The text bit of the letter is fine, I can easily print that. What I don't know is how to get the printer to print the background picture on each letter. If I'm doing 1000 letters I obviously don't want to send 1000 identical pictures to the printer.
Is there any way I can send one picture and get the printer to use that as a background until I tell it to do otherwise.
The merging programme is vb6 and will run on a pc networked to the printer. Can I use the printer driver to do this background picture thing?

Nope!!! That is one of the biggest complaints we had. There is no memory to the system to remember that type of info. You have to send the same picture 1000 times.
