HP GL/2 not working on Deskjet printers

I have various HP Laserjet printers that work fine when entering HP GL/2 printing simple lines and fonts, but the same jobs that are sent to Deskjet 5550 and 930C printers do not interpret the HP GL/2 and just print the instructions.

We've tried different drivers on the Deskjet 5550 but have not been successful.

Any ideas?

In all likelihood these are PCL3 printers and do NOT support HP-GL/2. This is definitely the case with the 9xx series. I'm not familiar with the 5550.

Only PCL5 printers support HP-GL/2. AFAIK, the only deskjets that are PCL5 are called "business inkjets";e.g., the 2250, 2280, 2300 etc.

There may be business inkjets out there today that do not support PCL5. I don't know. Examine the specifications very carefully.

PCL6 does NOT support HP-GL/2.

I agree with all you say; just to clarify the PCL6 position (slightly off-topic, I know); you state:

>> "PCL6 does NOT support HP-GL/2"

Quite correct - but it doesn't need to, since PCL6 (unlike native PCL5) provides all of the features (e.g. drawing of vector objects like ellipses) natively.
[This is as far as I'm aware - but then I'm not overly familiar with all of the HP-GL/2 features].

Hi Chris,

I only mentioned PCL6 in case he assumed that it was backwards compatible with PCL5.

My interpretation of the original post was that there was no printer driver in play at all.

Anyway, keep up the good work. Regards to Dan. ;-)
