HP Fax stays off-hook

I have an analog port off a VG248.

I plug butt set in it, the line is fine. Goes on an off hook like its supposed to with the butt set.

As soon as I plug a HP fax machine into it, the line goes off hook. I replaced the HP fax machine with a brand spanking new one out of the box, does the same thing.

Any clues?

I tried another port and a different cable pair.

If it works with your buttset it is your fax machines. Have you tried it with a different brnad fax for kicks?

I have run into issues before with HP multi purpose units Fax/printer/copier.

The problem was that I was using an old rj11 phone cable from the old phone system. The cable was crossed....but I am pretty sure it worked with the butt set.
