I don't think this problem is to do with the cable as my F4180 prints slowly and also copies slowly. I have done a number of copies this evening and despite the fact that the printer was unplugged from the computer before pushing the copy button it still worked very slowly taking 5 minutes to do one A4 page. The black ink level warning light also came on and so I switched it off and back on again and the light went out and the printing speed was normal and much quicker than it was. This makes me suspect the internal memory that documents are sent to to be printed, perhaps the capacity is too low. I am not sure if the driver is to blame but having had a lot of slow printing it seems to have cured itself..Spooky...thoughts please

Every once in a while some items seem to get "stuck" in the RAM, without better terminology to describe. A power cycle will usually fix this as it dumps whatever is in it. I don't believe that model is wireless/networkable so I assume you are connecting via the USB cable. If it happens again I would try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver/software just to eliminate it although in this case I would say it is unlikely the culprit. What PC are you running this on?

Well I have little time for this cable argument, as a cable is a simple technical item. As I said earlier,I disconnected my cable and did a copy, which was still slow to copy and also un-installed the software and reinstalled it with no effect on the problem. I do believe the ink cartridge argument as I did it and it worked. I have suspicions about the internal printer funtions as well, but for the moment it is working after the cartridge re-installation so fingers crossed.

Ok, I read it wrong when you were describing the wire situation. That is definitely an issue inherent with the printer then and the software should have no bearing. Hopefully new carts and a power cycle keep you on the right track. Let us know if it rears it head again.
