I have a message in the window which says "Remove and check black cartridge." I have changed the cartridge 3 times. I got it to work for awhile, then the message returned and no matter what I do, it won't go away and it won't print. The printer is connected directly to my PC. It will not print in color or black. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I really need to be able to use the printer to apply for jobs. Thanks!

#1 its an officejet and not a deskjet

here is the HP help page

Make sure you are using HP ink cartridges and not 3rd party or "refilled" or "referb" cartridges due to the fact that they arent relyable

Solution

WARNING: When the directions below ask you to remove the cartridges for a procedure, make sure to complete the procedure and reinstall the cartridges within 30 minutes. The ink in the cartridges can dry in the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long.
Remove both cartridges (even if the message indicates only one cartridge). See your printer's manual or help files for specific information on removing and inserting cartridges. Most HP printers must be turned on to remove the cartridges.

Unplug the printer.

Inspect the cartridges:

If the cartridges are new, make sure the protective tape has been removed completely.

Make sure the cartridges are not damaged. If the copper-colored electrical strip is torn or punctured, the cartridge must be replaced. Click here to see information on damage that can occur during installation of some cartridges .

Make sure the cartridges are compatible with the printer. See the manual for a list of compatible cartridges.

Reinstall the cartridges.

Make sure each cartridge is in the correct slot.

Make sure the cartridge is snapped into place and the latch is closed.

Close the front cover and plug the printer back in.

If the steps above have not solved the problem, clean the contacts. Click here to see how .

If the steps above have not solved the problem, repeat them. If the error still occurs after that, replace the cartridges.

If you have already replaced the cartridges once without solving the problem, click the link at the top of this page to contact HP. The printer may need to be serviced.

If the cartridge is covered under warranty, click the link at the top of this page to contact HP to get a replacement cartridge. Click here for warranty information for HP inkjet cartridges .

HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of refilled or remanufactured cartridges.
