I'm trying to print to a Deskjet 840C printer connected directly to the clients printer port. The driver is loaded on both the server and client. If I'm logged on to the server as anyone with admin permissions, I can print to the printer with no problems. If I log on as a standard user, the print doesn't print off. I've checked the permissions of the driver files and the printer permissions and everything looks OK. I've tried a different HP driver and that prints off, but obviously the colour definition is incorrect. Any ideas? [sig][/sig]

Does it work if you log onto the client machine with admin permissions?

If not, are you trying to connect to the printer via a network share, or are you choosing Client network? [sig][/sig]

Sorry, I don't think I explained things properly. I'm logging on to the client every time to test the printer. The printer isn't shared at all, it's purely setup up for the clients use. So when I log on as administrator, it works, if I log on as anybody else, it doesn't. [sig][/sig]

You may find that you need to manually map the printer at the client.

Are you mapping it through Microsoft Network, or Client?

Have you given permissions to the user, at the server, to the printer attached to the client?

It certainly appears to be permissions-related. Try running Filemon before attempting to print, and see if this shows anything. [sig][/sig]

FYI. . .

I have had a few HP Deskjet 800 series printers that were connected via citrix. I had a really bad time setting them up - sometimes they would work and sometimes they would not. After some investigation - Parts of the HP Deskjet 800 family (820, 810 - for sure) are incompatible with the Terminal Server / Metataframe setup. Even though there are drivers out there - they do not always work. I got that invaluable info from HP!!!

So, word of caution - don't get stuck with the HP 800 series in citrix! I had to buy new printers. And even though they work locally - when you try to redirect through citrix it may or may not work. . . .

Good Luck!

Hope this helps!

You are right, Pinkman. Hewlett Packard, and other printer manufacturers, need to develop many of their drivers in order to have better compatibility with Microsoft NT4 Terminal Server Edition and Windows 2000. Since Hewlett Packard have acknowledged this, maybe we'll see more reliable drivers very soon.

Only those listed on the Hardware Compatibility List, on Microsoft's site, can be guaranteed to work in this environment. Microsoft themselves provide alternatives to the manufacturers', which are truly Terminal server compliant.

The Citrix MetaFrame front end merely provides an interface through which to access the NT subsystem, and thence the HP drivers, via some highly functional tools.

Thanks CitrixEngineer and Pinkman for your replies. After much playing about with permissions and mappings I gave up. The HP Deskjet 850C driver allows the handfull of users using the 840C to print off the reports they need to get their job done. If they need to print anything more complex I've told them to print locally from their PC. It's not the perfect solution I was after, but it now allows me to get on with the 1001 other problems I need to sort out.
