HP D4160 ink reset problem

I have an HP deskjet D4160 and I put a new black ink cartridge. The printer is still saying that the black cartridge is still empty. Does anyone know how to reset the printer so that it sees the cartridge is full?
Does that affect the online status also? The printer in the control panel is showing that it is offline. I need it to read 'ready'.
