HP All in One Fails on Startup

When our psc2210v starts, it begins the startup routine then settles into a sound similar to grinding small gears, which repeats about once a second until I turn it off.

If I open the top, nothing is visibly happening there. Seems to come from the area below the display window.

Does anybody know if there is a fix?

I think we need to know some more info...

1. Is the printer new? If so, just take it back under warranty.
2. Okay, I seriously doubt it's new.

Usually any sort of grinding you might here will be a problem in the gears that move everything around and/or load paper, etc. I'd say that if it is continually doing that, and it's unusable, than it's dumpster time. Time to get a new printer. With the cost of printers, it just isn't worth spending too much effort on an old one. I still have my hp officejet 6110 going strong. Had a few quirks here and there, but it's lasted now around 7 years I think. It's been a great printer. On the other hand, when it dies, it'll be time to toss and replace.

If budget is your main concern, I'd suggest checking out your local Target stores. I've seen on many occasions, HP all-in-one printers that sold for between $30 and $60 on clearance... so it definitely would not take much to spend more on ink than printer with those.

Thanks for the reply. It seems the underside of the glass (yes, it's a very old printer, but if it works . . .) was smudged with some kind of precipitate, it looked like.

Once it was cleaned according to some instructions I got on the HP site, it has not repeated that behavior. Works fine now.

Apparently the clearance between the sensor bar (real name escapes me at the mo') and the glass above it is quite tiny. I could see traces of the bar's connector in the smudge on the glass.

Well, glad it got worked out either way. I did that on my 6110 once - cleaned the glass. But it wasn't so bad as what you're talking about... it did have some dust built up over the years. Of course when I did it, I ended up messing something up JUST a little. At first, after I did so, the images on scans came out kinda warped, but they're back to normal now. . I figured with the age of it, I wasn't necessarily going to hurt anything to give cleaning it a shot. But I will say it takes patience - LOTS of patience.
