I have been seeing a lot of anguish, and disappointment with these units, and have had a few troubles myself.
HP does not want to address the issues that have come up in many forums, and their position seems to be buy a new unit. However, the advise that HP gives , begrudgingly, is mostly correct. If you disconnect the unit and re-connect it again, {mostly in XP} it does not "map" the unit to the programs that you would "scan to". Workarounds of this anomally are given without much merit, but I have found that a complete removal of the printing program and a clean re-boot of the pc before re-installing from the OEM CD does the trick. A hassle, yes, but HP sells stuff, and support has declined with the outsourcing to ignnorant people who can only recite. Also, allow all the "extras" that want to install, as HP wants to monitor the use of these types of product. I think that if you skip anything, the program will glitch later on. Another note: XP is evil

Addendum: I believe that the units Machine ID is the focal point on whether the PC and the unit will allow scan to functions. I unplugged this unit, and then plugged it back in an hour later, and complete functionality was available.
The PC did not want to install a new printer.
I connected another unit, and the PC wanted to install a new printer. Scan to functions were not available.
I hope this helps anyone and everyone. Michael

Another hint...
Before reformatting your whole system you could try this :
If an installation fails, first use the uninstall option from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel then load the installation CD.(A restart might be required after the uninstall)
On many of the AiO installation CD's there is a "hidden" cleaning utility that will wipe most entries that corrupt the windows registry database and remove obsolete folders.
The scrubber is often found in the /utils/ccc/ or /tmp/ folder on the CD. Copy all the files starting with scrubber to a folder on your C:> drive. Next read the info/txt if any for usage options then run the scrubber.exe file.
Note :
Be advised that some older scrubber versions on older AiO printer installation CD's are rather "agressive" and tends to vipe anything that spells "HP" in the name !
System admins should keep that in mind so they won't loose all their HP printers on the server, but then again... I dare to say only a fool installs a AiO device on a server [wink]
