HP 990CXI printer has been working fine. Replaced both cartridges a couple of days ago and it printed after that. Tonight it suddenly will not print. Ger error "device not ready". Device Manager does not show it in USB. Switched to parallel and got same result. "Estimatedink levels" show right amount but that is coming from something it has stored on the PC - I get that even when I pull the plug (that has never happened before - when there was no connetion I could not get ink levels).

I'm guessing the printer needs a reset but I can't find which combination/sequence of keys will do that.

I changed the cartridge again and got the local test page to print (but not from PC)

Does anyone have a suggestion? (Win 2K system).

I would completely uninstall the printer software using the add/remove programs method. Then delete any traces of the printer in PRINTERS and DEVICE MANAGER. Then reboot the PC with the printer UNPLUGGED from the PC. There might also be an uninstall tool on the CD.

Then follow the instructions on installing the printer. From what I recall you DON'T plug the printer in until the installation calls for you to do so. Plugging the printer in first can cause lots of problems/installation failure as I did it myself once and suffered.

I disconnected the USB cable and connected the printer via the parallel port. And it is working just fine. So I suspect there is a USB problem with the PC. Especially as when I disconnect a disk drive from the USB (after STOPping it) and connect a different disk drive, the PC does not see it until I disconnect and re-connect the second drive again.

Remove any USB related drivers from in Device Manager & restart. The drivers should automatically be re-installed & will hopefully sort out the problems.

Most likely viruses or spyware. I've seen it dozens of times

Thanks for the suggestion, dglienna. But I run Spy Sweeper, Avg Anti-Virus (free) and AVG Anti-Spyware (free) daily. I doubt it could be either a virus or spyware after all of these daily sweeps.
