I'm installing a 9050 PS driver on XP SP2 (networked printer). The printer does not have tray four installed, when I configure the settings, it already says Tray 4 Not Instaled but when I click OK I get a message saying:
Code:
There are one or more conflict settings:
Tray 4: Not Installed
Paper Source: Tray 4
And an option to fix automatically or fix manually myself. I've checked the printing preferences and I can't find anything that says Tray 4 anywhere so I don't know why it's throwing up this message. I've tried select fix automatically but it when I go back in I still get the error again.

Even if I go into printing preferences and change the source from automatically select to Tray 1 - I still get the error message. Why is this?

Anybody got any ideas on this at all? I done some more testing - when I select "Update Now" from Automatic Configuration on the advanced tab - the yellow warning goes away from beside the "Tray 4: Not Instaled" option - but when I go back into the properties again - it's there again. Like I said, for the life of me I can't figure out where windows thinks the paper source is tray 4. Maybe this is just a bug with PS version 6.41.41.0??? Please, somebody post back if you know anything about this.

There are two different places that you can select a paper tray. One is in the printer properties (right-clicking on the printer icon), but the other is in the program (I.e. Word).

You need to check both places. First, make sure your printer properties doesn't have Tray 4 installed, then make sure in whatever you're printing from, that the paper source is set properly.

Another thing that can cause funky stuff like this, is if your printer thinks that a certain size or type of paper is loaded into a tray (for example, it thinks you have Letterhead in tray 4), and your software is set to "Print first page on letterhead" or something to that effect.

Let me know what you find!

(And don't forget the little purple stars if I'm right! <LOL>)

No I think you mis-understood - I'm not trying to print a document, I'm merely trying to install the printer queue and configure the paper sizes for the firstly 3 trays. When I click OK this is when I get this message. I done some more testing and I've come to the conclusion that this is a bug with the PS version I'm using. I tested with a more recent PS version and also with PCL6 and neither of them gave the error. Also, on the version I'm using under Tray 4: as well as having installed and not installed options I have a third option that says HelpIndex_12000 - if I select this funnily enough the error goes away. And when I click the field again (after clicking apply) the option changes to "not installed".

Maybe you're still right - maybe I have missed something here though? As for stars ... is this enough

I think you answered your own question but just in case. In the options for the printer set tray 4 to, "not installed" and your problem should go away. If it doesn't then make sure you are logged in with administrative rights when making the change.

And yes I think that is plenty of stars for gbaughma, he has certainly earned them. I think he would prefer them next to his name though. ;P

Yea, that's why I posted in the first place - because Tray 4 was set to not installed but it still kept contradicting me saying that the source *somewhere* was set to tray 4 also. It wasn't a rights issue, the change was succesful. Like I said, I suspect it's a bug with the version of PS driver I was using because it didn't happen with a later version (which unfortunately I wasn't allowed to use). For some strange reason, chnaingin not installed to HelpIndex12001 (which was in the drop down list) seemed to fix the problem - but I have nooooo idea why !! Anyway, thanks for the post all the same.

Out of curiousity, have you tried doing a cold reset? I have seen many of times where a printer looks to be set right, but wants to do something else. Usually a cold reset will resolve this. Basically, it returns the printer to its factory settings. I would suggest removing the JetDirect card before doing this, because if you leave it installed, it too will get reset.

To perform the cold reset do the following.

1. Turn the printer off.
2. Turn the printer on.
3. Wait until the printer begins counting memory.
4. Press and hold the "Checkmark" button (or the 6 key if it's a MFP)
5. Continue holding until all three control panel lights illuminate, then release the "checkmark" or 6 key.
6. Press the "down" arrow (9 if MFP) or "up" arrow (3 if MFP) to scroll to the appropriate selection. (Cold Reset)
7. Press the "checkmark" key, or (6 if MFP) to confirm.

The printer will perform the cold reset, and then come back to the "Ready" state.

Give this a try, and we'll see if it fixes the issue.
