HP 8200i

I have this HP 8200i or 8100i I forget which one but anyways here's my problem. When I put a cd in (blank or a store boughten) sometimes the burner will not read from it and the light keeps blinking.. if I reboot my machine and keep the cd in then it will read it fine. As soon as I open the try and put another cd in then it does the same thing. It won't read or recognize the cd until I reboot with the cd in the drive. I am running Windows XP Pro but this has happened on any OS I run. any suggestions?

Make sure that all cables and wires are securely connected to the drive.

If that's ok, then use a commercial kit to clean the lens.

If no luck, then connect it to another system if possible.
If the same thing happens, then replace it.

You've replaced the cd-rom and the same thing happens?!

no I didn't replace the drive. it only does it on this cd burner and not a normal cdrom drive.

Then I'd say it's a physical problem with the CD Burner. If you've tried cleaning it and reseating the cables and some different cables with still no luck, then most likely the Burner is slightly broken....especially if other CD_ROM drives work. I don't know what else to tell you except that it may be time for a new CD Burner. =(

So you're saying that it works ok on another system?
If so, then the burner is not faulty.

NO...another CD-Rom in his system works...i dont think he ever said anything about trying this one in another system.

Ah, but after re-reading closer I do see that. Well yes, if that is the case (if that CD Burner works fine in another computer) then the CD Burner is fine and that isolates the problem down to your PC. Could you verify this information for us though gervy?
