HP 7580b pen plotter

I have finally got my 7580b plotter connected and answering print commands, but it only seems to print a centerpoint at midpoint on the paper, then it draws lines and uncipherable marks leading to and from the centerpoint, quickly tearing a hole at the center point. Is this left-over data in the buffer? How can I get my drawing?
