I have an HP 4050N printer with an internal HP jetdirect 600N print server. When printing from Office applications (Excel, Word, e.g.) we get pages of jibberish on the top of pages. We also are experiencing slow printer response time for network print jobs, and sometimes the same job will print incomplete, over and over again, until it finally prints out in full. A tech guy who came to service the printer said it may have something to do with updating the firmware in the printer, but when I try to do that using the HP Download Manager it does not work. Any ideas how to get my printer fixed or the firmware updated? Should I install another jetdirect server?

If you can extract the firmware file itself, you can try to upload it to the JetDirect card via FTP or a Telnet session. If you need to update the firmware for the printer, you will have to obtain a new additional firmware DIMM as the one in the printer is not upgradeable.

Thanks hpwizzard, now for the dumb questions. How do I update the firmware to the jetdirect card via Telnet? Also, is a new firmware DIMM something I need to purchase? I am not very technical when it comes to stuff like this. Thanks

I really would prefer the FTP connection... And NO question is ever considered to be dumb in this forum regarding LaserJet printers [wink]

1) Open a command prompt window and go into the folder where the firmware file is located. From your command prompt type FTP "IP address of printer" and hit ENTER.
2) Type your username (if any) else just press ENTER twice.
3) Now you are logged in and can type PUT "filename of firmware file". The new firmware should now be uploaded to the printers JetDirect card.
4) Powercycle the printer and verify the JetDirect card has been updated by printing a config page from the printers controlpanel.

The jibberish you get might just as well had happened because of an update of your operational system. M$ unfortunatly often screws up printer drivers when they release their service packs. A new driver might be required also to get the printer to print properly again. If you want to exchange the firmware in the printer, you can order this part # C4251-67905 directly from HP´s partsurfer online if in the US. ( else call your re-seller and ask for this part.

I tried the FTP command, however I get the following message:

connect :Connection refused

What now? Thanks

How about if you get "Illegal Entry, Please retry" when you enter the PUT command?

Hmmm... The firmware itself in this printer can NOT be flashed/upgraded only the one in the JetDirect card. If you wish to upgrade a new firmware for the printer you have to obtain a new FW DIMM and place it in a slot next to the memory on the side of the printer. Another thing... I presume the printer is shared via some sort of server to your network. If so check that the driver versions are the same on both clients and server.
