Hello,
I have an old hp laserjet 4 plus printer that i want to install on a Windows XP computer. I tried doing it by assigning it a IP address and then in Printers and Faxes, creating a new printer locally, then adding a port. but it doesn't find the ip address that i've created. can anyone help me to install this printer properly?
Thank you,
Katy

Can you ping to the IP Address you assigned to the printer? Go to a command prompt and type ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (x=IP Address of printer) .

If you can ping to the printer you should be able to add the printer the way you are describing. If you can't ping then you have to make sure the data port your printer is connected to is good.

i tried pinging the printer and it timed out. am i missing something?

Couple of things to check:

(1) on the Windows XP computer do you have an IP Address and can you browse the network?
(2) If you do have an IP Address and you can browse the network then this means either you have the wrong IP Address defined on the printer or the data port the printer is connected to is not getting a good connection.
(3) Try taking a laptop or desktop and connect to the same data port the printer is using. See if you get an IP Address and see if you can connect to the network. If you do get an IP Address and you can connect to the network then you need to verify the IP Address settings are correct on the printer.
(4) Print out a configuration page on the printer. Verify your IP Address, subnet mask and default gateway is correct. I assume you are using static IP? If the printer is using a DHCP Server to get an IP Address then you need to verify what IP Address it is using.
