HP 2410 Grinding noise 1

System - Hand built
Windows XP
1 Gig Memory
Intel 2.4 CPU
MSI 875p board.
Sound blaster card.
HP 2410 photosmart printer.

Problem with HP 2410 photosmart printer.
We recently had a power outage. On trying to start the printer everything is fine as it runs through the start up sequence.

Then I get a frozen hourglass and a repeating grinding loise as though gears will not engage. I have tried a number of fixes posted online and nothing is working. I did have this problem once before because I pulled the plug on the machine by accident but this went away before.

Can anyone help please?

Usually this is caused from one of the following:

1) An obstruction isn't letting the print head move
2) The indexing strip has come loose, and the head is trying to zero itself, but has no point of reference on where to stop
3) The track that the head moves has become "gummed up" with paper dust, etc.

I have, in the past, cleaned the tracks with a paper towel, then given it a very light lube with white lithium grease.

Greg thank you so much. I will try as you suggested it does seem mechanical and not software which is what I have read a great deal about. The Fax seems to have kicked in again now and I must admit I have not cleaned this machine in some time so I will give it a go.

Lithium grease? I've never used it but suppose the local (GOOD) PC supply store will have this?

If all else fails, you should be able to get it at a sporting goods store... they use it to grease fishing reels.
