Every morning when my boss turns on his computer his hp laserjet 1000 is offline. He uses XP Professional. The steps I have taken thus far is just download the latest drivers from HP and reinstall the printer. But to get it working again I actually have to uninstall the usb drivers and the printer and let the system reinstall the whole bunch. This problem didn't seem to occur until after the latest wave of windows updates were run. Is there any particular update that may cause this issue? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any fix for this to stop its reoccuring.

Try using a USB Hub, with the external power.

That will keep the USB to the printer energized, and it should "come up" faster when the system boots.

After doing many lengthy searches on Microsoft's site I found where they have a bug that will be fixed with a hot fix or by the next update that when a usb printer runs out of paper during a print job, or if the usb printer is powered off and then powered on, or if the autopower isn't on, this can occur. Not sure where all that fits in but I'm gonna power the printer straight into the outlet instead of through the surge protector that gets turned off nightly.
