What you want to implement is a request to the server that either uses cURL or socket/stream functions.

I'd start with the socket functions because it is a valuable experience to programm basic HTTP requests. The manual has several examples under and the other entries in the same family of functions.
 
The task you have described is the reason I started using PHP in the first place *grin*. You could do it using other environments but I wanted to try something different at the time. And I further support the suggestion of looking into sockets first over cURL -- great learning experience... and also relatively simple :)
