I have an old Hayes Optima 33.6, calling to a 103 (yes, 300 baud, yuk) modem. Problem is while dialing, the modem is sending the FAX CNG beep-tones; the 103 hears the tone, then hears it stop; 103 assumes the remote modem dropped carrier and hangs up.

No, I can't change the 103, much as I'd like to.

Is there an AT command to suppress the CNG tone while dialing? I know it would make it harder on a FAX share device, but I don't care.

Thanks

If the modem is voice capable, you can dial in voice mode, and then change to data mode after you receive the <DLE>f (2100 Hz echo cancellation tone). Then switch to data mode. Or you may be able to put the Hayes modem into 103 mode. I tried to download a manual, but couldn't find one that was reasonable.

It may need a B1 in the dial string, like ATB1DT to set it into Bell mode.
