Hi

The following Problem with VSS need to Fix

Legato Networker is installed on a W2k3 Standard Server in Version 7.1

The Server i want to Bachup via VSS is a W2k3 Enterprise server with Microsoft Exchange 2003, Legato networker Client 7.1, Networker Module for Exchange Server Version 4.0.0.44

I want to backup all Savesets via VSS and VSS is enabled on all Volumes.
When i start to backup maybe drive C via Microsoft Backup the Tool backups the Drive via VSS.

Legato only saves the Savesets like System State, System Files, ASR .... via VSS but not the local Drives

Witch steps do i need to enable the VSS Backup ????

Thanks

This may well be - i have no practical experience with this feature so far but
at least i know that you need a VSS client license - you did not state whether such is installed.

This is what the Admin Guide tells you:
Writers are currently only available for active services or applications. If a
service or application is present on a system but not active, information from
its writer will not be available. Consequently, a writer can appear or disappear
from backup to backup. If a writer is available and a VSS client license exists,
NetWorker software defaults to backing up data by using VSS technology. If a
VSS client license does not exist or a writer is disabled for an application,
NetWorker software backs up data by using the legacy method. During a given
backup for an individual client, either the VSS method or the legacy method is
used, but not both.

Good luck.

Hallo 605

Im in Conference with Legato about The 45 Day License Enabler for VSS. In The Legato Media Kit from November 2003 the VSS License enabler doesn´t work.
So i tested with the evaluation enabler of Legato Networker 7.1 this includes all enabler keys for 30 days

Legato can´t tell me a License enabler who works

They say it must work with the Evaluation Enabler

VSS on the exchange server works which you can see when you start a Backup with the local Backup from Microsoft

It´s a little bit funny that vss works for system state and so on but not for the local Drives.
This tells me that the enabler is working.

Just to clear this up:
- Your statement makes me think that you need a license code for eval purposes -
this is incorrect. NW will run without any license for 30 days and it will
support 90% of all features. From my personal experience, only the snapimage solution
must be enabled when you want to test it.
- You may extend the eval period to 45 days by entering "grace" as the
authorization code.
- Once you entered aany license code (you usually start with the so-called
base enabler, it will limit the functionality to this code and you must add
appropriate licenses to be able to test other functions.

To backup the SYSTEM.. save sets, you do not need a VSS license, this is covered by
the 'standard' client license already.

Unfortunately, i did not have time to test the VSS capabilities yet, so
i cannot halp you any further right now. But if you have problems dealing with
Legato directly, why don't you use one of their partners ?
