How unix authentication works?

where can i get the source code of
"login" executable?

Is the authentication same for all Unix based systems
esp Linux, Solaris ..

thanks ,
Johinth

Technically, this is not authentication. It is "account verification". The "login" executable will simply read usercode and password from stdin and verify if the account exists and if the password matches.

Authentication would be Kerberos or PGP.

As for source code ? Every O/S makes some changes to the original version.

Do a search on "login.c".

Bill.

If my m/c is configured as NIS client.
Then how the authentication will takes place.

I mean to ask
How the user id and passwords verification will
be done which is in the other m/c(NIS Server)?

Thanks,
Johinth
