how to write an application for recieveing mails

Hi,
I used the SMTP protocals to send a mail from VC using the CSocket programing, but I am not getting any help to write an applicxation that can download mails from the mail server. Please help me in doing so. I don't want to use the MAPI. any help would be appriciated. Can any one say the RFC that need to be used for the mail client i.e reciving the mails.
