How to write a client fro exchange server???

I have a little problem here, i wanna write a client which can log u into an exchange server and retrieve ur emails, i dont know if i am writting this in the right forum but if anyone does have an idea please can u give me a hint. it would be very kind of u. i know exchange server uses smtp, but still am stuck with how to go about this problem. i have tried to write a pop3 client, which i was successful in to an extent, so if it is the same thing please let me know. thanx and also what is ldap and what is the use of it in exchange server and also when u writting a client do u have to take ldap into consideration.
