How to view wav datas 1

I'm searching a wav viewing data sample. I would like to develop a "vu-meter" which post tempo, low, medium frequencies in real time. i don't suceeded in finding concrete samples with Direct Sound, Direct Music.
It might exists a way to do it with DirectSound?
If a solution exists with GNU, i would be interested in .
