i recently installed windows 2003 server(on a pc) and was wondering how i can make it public on the net.
that is without getting a domain name.
like i would just use my ip address.
i dont see any point paying for an extra ip address just to share some files.
so anybody an idea?

Run IIS. Purchase a domain name. Develop a web page. Open a web browser and type whatismyip. Hire a DNS provider. Tell them what your IP is an domain name, Wait 24 - 48 hours. Often the domain name seller will sell you DNS services too.
Most any web development platform will also have specific instructions but in general...

Putting it on the net is one thing, securing this server is another. Among other things;
- Have you applied appropriate NTFS security
- Have you disabled non-required services
- Have you renamed the administrator account and disabled it and creating a new administrative account
- Do you have a firewall installed?
- Have you setup antivirus

Putting a box on the net is easy, keeping it secure is another.

A domain is cheap (<$20), as is an SSL certificate (<$20).

As itsp1965 mentioned, keeping it secure is entirely different.

Install a firewall w/ VPN.

this is the whole thing about..i dont want to purchase a domain name or create a webpage.
i just want to share my files on the web(ip address)
i used to use Xerver(free server program) that turned your pc into a server.
that's what i wanna do with windows server.
instead of typing a domain name i just would type in my ip address.
