How to use Variables/ Parameters in pre-sql/scripts in PowerCentre 6.2

i need to be
able to use a variable/parameter (I don't care if it is a mapping parameter, a workflow parameter or a workflow variable) to pass
a
value to a pre sesion sql or script. I was told there would be a way to do this, please provide me with some kind of example.
Thanks FYI - we are using PC 6.2
