How to Use Premier to make a SVCD? 1

I've got Premier 6 and I want to make SVCD's from my canon A520 film clips and stills.

I'm only using Premier because I can't find anything else to do the job. Ulead Movie Factory will make a VCD happily but stops processing SVCD with an error message. And there's some hassle with Power Producer Gold - I forget what but I couldn't use it, either.

If I'm using the wrong thing please set me straight on that firstly before going any further.

If I'm trying to do the wrong thing please set me straight on that. I'm trying to make SVCD's because I'm supposing the quality will be better than the VCD's I've already made (with movie factory). If that's not true I might as well abandon the effort.

If I'm doing what I should be doing and I've got the right tool then I need to know how to use it.

I'm stymied right at the beginning. I don't know what 'presets' to adopt. I'm in Australia. I guess I need PAL. So for want of better knowledge I've selected the first one on the list - standard 32khz, whatever that means.

Then I go ahead and stumble about trying to put together something from my downloaded .avi files from my Powershot and the .jpg stills.

Premier won't accept the .avi movies. I have run a couple of them through Virtual Dub for some reason (I don't know what) and I try them. Premier accepts them.

So one .jpg and one (Vdubbed) .avi is a small test file. I can't find anything to do except export it so I do that and there I am with a new .avi in my directory. It runs in Premier alright. And it runs in Windows Media Player alright.

Now how to make a SVCD from it?

I haven't got any burner software. I had Nero but it was tied to the burner it came with. When that burner died the software became useless. I downloaded Nero7 but the file appears to be corrupt. I've got Cheetah and Burnatonce but I don't think they produce SVCD.

I've been advised elsewhere that I should be doing it all 'hands on' and using TMPGEnc.

Can anyone please give me some clear advice on how to proceed?

Remember, the objective is just home movies from Canon Powershot A520 downloaded stills and .avi movies. Nothing fancy. SVCD because I don't have a DVD burner. Probably I should get one and forget VCD stuff entirely. If so, then tell me straight out.

regards,

I wouldn't bother with SVCD. Old technology nowadays.

DVD burners are cheap and easy to fit yourself and, assuming you choose a suitable one, come with DVD burning software.

Choice of DVD blank can make a huge difference to compatibility with other players. I tend to choose LiteOn burners because the free download Kprobe2 analysis software works with that make to test disk quality after burning.

Thanks. I'll take your advice. We've got to learn to move on, don't we. :)

Since you use Premiere 6, you will not have an MPEG encoder within Premiere.

You might want to look at for tools related to the TMPGenc encoder for DVD authoring.

If you do choose to use TMPGenc for encoding, the best way is to use a frameserver to feed the Premiere timeline direct into TMPGenc, and thus save making an intermediate AVI file. I think that the best option is the free frameserver from Easy to set up and very easy to use.

Thanks again. I've now got a directory with 40 objects in it and my head's spinning...

:)
