Ok here is my situation

I installed a database using MSDE - but didn't have enterprise manager - i made a note of the sa password when creating the instance.

A friend borrowed me a sql server dc - it wont install the server tools on my machine (which is okay I dont want them) but said it would install the client tools - and Enterprise manager.

So i have installed EM, created an alias in using the client network utility but enterprise manager does not seem to be able to find my MSDE instance - do I need to do something else?

EM should work fine. When you create a new registration for server name you can either enter (local) or the name of your computer.

When you installed MSDE, did you install with an instance name, or everything default?

HI

I installed with an instance name. I select (local) in enterprise manager and get the bog standard "server does not exist or access denied ..etc" message - I checked the service for my instance and it is indeed running - ? So i'm confused why EM cannot see the instance - when I installed it I opted for SQl security (and I know I have the right password) so I don't know why I cannot connect

You have to add the instance name in the registration. It's something like (local)\instancename, or nameofcomputer\instancename.

If you install with an instance, it has to be referenced in everything you do. If you are creating an application as an example, in your connection string you have to include \instancename.

Guys thanks for the suggestions I will try them out later.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but still no joy. First i tried connecting with local\instanceName and then 127.0.0.1\instance name in the register serger wizard in enterprise manager, didn't work. I then read the kb article but it refers to the server network tool which is not installed on my installation (im on windows xp so only the client tools are loaded) - anyone know where I can get it from? Tried simply copying it and the dll from a nother machine and registering the dll but that didn't work either :(

when you use local is has to be in brackets - i.e. (local).

believe it or not, that can make all the difference.

AccordingToDale - I could kiss you for this!!!! Thanks a million that worked - and i've been struggling with this for ages always coming back to it every couple of months or so still to no avail - thanks a TON!!!

Same applies to SQL 2005 Express edition. You must use (local) in parenthesis to access it. Annoying, but consistent.
