How to use mod_rewrite to point to diffrent file on Linux server?

I want create .htaccess file for one of my folder so that when web visitor ask a file like me.png it point them to me.php instead. I be happy if some one tell me how to make this .htaccess file in linux server and where to place it.Thanks


server information:
System Debian GNU/Linux - Bi PIII 1Ghz - 1 Gb RAM - Kernel 2.4.x

Thanks for u reply. There are sites that does not allow dyanmic image with php extentions so i want to find a way around it so when user call for example image.png they give him image.php instead. Hope to get help to find away around this problem.Thanks
