We use BrightStor ArcServe Backup for Windows 9.01 and want to backup 60GB of data from a WIN2000 server whilst using "ArcServe/Options/Backup Media/Compress Files Before Backup" but when trying to backup we receive:

Backed up volume disk quota.
Backup Session 1 on Media xxx
Source Directory: \\zzz
Compression is disabled due to hardware data compression.
Note: Connect to \\zzz
Start Backup Operation.
Run Backup Job Now.

and as a result 60GB of data gets backed up and 60GB of media gets used.
Why do we receive
"Compression is disabled due to hardware data compression."
and is there a way to get the 60GB backed compressed and using less of the media?

software compression is disabled for the exact reason it says it is, the tape drive is doing hardware compression. If the 60gb of data on disk is taking up 60gb on tape then chances are the data is already compressed. See How does ARCserve control compression? faq478-4399 for some more details.
