You can't work with Photoshop images in Illustrator like that. The tools in Illustrator work over vector images, not bitmaps (which are the ones produced in Photoshop).
I suggest that you take a look at some older posts in this forum for learning about the differences between these two programs and also for tips for new users - there's quite a lot of reading material here
