We are having a HiPath 4000 basic system V2.0 with 2 x AP3700 and related servers (XPressions,AM,ACWin,etc). This PABX system is currently working ok for digital phones(optipoint500 adv), analog fax and some of the related servers.
Now we have to replace majority of the digital phones with IP phones. So, I badly need advice as to what needs to changed, upgraded or added to the current system in regard to hardware, applications, services and configurations level to convert it to an IP based system.

Thanks in advance,
Rhm

The software you have supports IP phones, but you need STMI2 peripheral cards in the PBX. There might be no availability of STMI2 so STMI4 would be used instead which might require a software upgrade (still within UV2.0) of your PBX if you are on an earlier version at the moment.

This assumes of course you have space in your LTUs to fit the STMI card. You can have either 60 or 120 channel versions (same with STMI4) but you can configure up to 240 extensions on the card itself.

thanks for the information.
so I need the following:
1. 1 x STMI2 or STMI4 card (there is enough space at the LTU)
2. we need to upgrade the software( need more details pls?)
3. To reconfigure the HiPath 4000 V2.0 for ip phones support (how?)
4. layer 3 switch configured with say two vlans for IP phones (say cisco 3750) (advice given by Nair)
pls advice for the above if its correct or needs something more.

1) Yes
2) Not necessarily. When UV2.0 was released only the STMI2 was available. Then the STMI4 (basically an uprated STMI2) was released later on. So earlier versions of UV2.0 will not be aware of the STMI4 card. Check the BGDAT file with dis-bgdat. If STMI4 is in there, you're OK. If it's not, either don't buy an STMI4 or upgrade the UV2.0 software so that it supports an STMI4.
3) You need to add the STMI2 card with BCSU as normal, and configure it for IP phones with HFAB amo. Then add the IP phones as an IP device type instead of direct connection, SBCSU is still used, it's just the same as adding a TDM phone.
4)Use VLANs if you wish, I'd suggest getting it working without VLANs first, make sure the phones come up, then reconfigure for VLANs.

If you have any documentation, it sounds like you don't, an STMI card providing IP phones is called an HG3530, not HG3550 (IP Trunk) or HG3570/75 (remote IP shelf).

I've installed a LAN for a Siemens system that was upgraded to VoIP and they bought Cisco 3750s with Siemens phones.

The switch config was:

ip routing
vlan 100
name DATA
vlan 200
name VOICE
vlan 300
name PABX
Interface vlan 100
description DATA
IP address 10.1.100.1 255.255.255.0
Interface vlan 200
description VOICE
IP address 10.1.200.1 255.255.255.0
ip helper-address x.x.x.x [DHCP server address]
Interface vlan 300
description PABX
IP address 10.1.300.1 255.255.255.0

PABX Management & Signalling:
interface range g1/0/47-48
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 300
PABX VoIP:
interface g1/0/46
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 200

For the switchports with phones:
interface range g1/0/1-44
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk native vlan 100
switchport trunk allow vlan 100,200
spanning-tree portfast trunk
For faxes
interface g1/0/45
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 200
spanning-tree portfast

Out of all the VoIP projects I've been involved in, this one had its frustrations, but at a purely technical level the VoIP was up-and-running straight away without any real problems. Either the Siemens kit is good, or the technicians that install it are good. Or both.

thanks all for the technical advice.
Where can I get the related documentation for this upgradation/configuration...?
we plan to install around 50 to 100 ip phones at our setup.

VinceWhirlwind, can you tell about ur previous Pabx details (my setup details are present up) and how or what was changed/upgraded and configured and approx costing.
does anyone know some good vendor/technical expertise in gulf region for this updgradation?

Sorry, you can't use the STMI4 on UV2.0, I thought an updated BGDAT had been released for it, but it hasn't.

So you need STMI2 only.

I would advise getting the IP phones working without DHCP and VLANs first. The DHCP server can be configured for option 43/option 60 to configure the phones for VLANs but if you try and do it all together you'll have problems. So just do it one step at a time.

If you're looking for documentation the Hipath 4000 is normally delivered with the EDoku CD's that contain the service manual. Used to be, anyway. I've seen the EDoku manuals available on public websites in some places, you might be able to find them.

Anyone pls provide me the details of the Vendor/freelance techincal HiPath expert to provide onsite services and support in gulf regions like Qatar, Bahrain and others.

Thanks in advance.
