Hello,

WE use Netware 411. Whenever there is a shortage of space on a particular volume, novell broadcasts heaps of messages to our users' workstations . How do you turn this off. It would be good if only certain workstation could receive these messages.

Please help

Regards,

Poklat

At the console, you can type:

SET VOLUME LOW WARN ALL USERS = OFF

which will stop all users from receiving low diskspace messages. I wouldn't advise switching off all broadcasts as it can come in handy when you need to shut a server down quickly and you need to advise everyone via a network broadcast message -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the info, it's something I was looking for info about as well. One question though. How do you set it so only the administrators or certain users get the broadcast message about volume size. Also, is there a way to change WHEN it gives the low warning, like instead of it being when it's very low, can I set it to broadcast when the system is at like 1gb or something? Thanks.

Ted

If you set the low diskspace warning to off, the admin users still get the messages - it just doesn't send it to everyone.

You can SET VOLUME LOW WARNING THRESHOLD to a value between 0 and 100,000. The default is 256 and it is based on what your volumes block size it. If your volume block size is 64k, 64 * 256 = approximately 16Mb. To set your threshold to 1Gb, perform the following calculation:

1,000,000 Kb (1Gb approx) divided by 64Kb (your volume block size = 15625 as the value to set the threshold at.

Sorry if it is not clear, if not I shall try again. -----------------------------------------------------

You know everything don't you man =). If you could try and clarify how exactly I find out what my block size is, as that's the only part i'm not understanding. The rest seems pretty clear, and thanks for the quick response.

Thanks for the compliment - years of staring at servers ....

Anyway, on NetWare 4.x:

a) From the server console: LOAD INSTALL

b) Select 'Volume Options'

c) Choose your volume and press Enter on it. Volume block size is second from top.

Hopefully another happy customer? ;) -----------------------------------------------------

Once again a happy customer. If only I could get you to come look at this one server that i've messed with on and off since december, and have posted about here like 3 times hehe. Thanks again bud.

That's the idea of Tek Tips. Glad I could have been of some help. -----------------------------------------------------
